Dr. Mark Greenberg, Director of The Prevention Research Center for the Promotion of Human Development (http://www.prevention.psu.edu ) and Prevention Research Center Professor of Human Development and Psychology at Penn State, is one of the leaders in the U.S. and Europe in mindfulness (meditation) and its use in developmental pediatric psychology. Mark is also famous for being one of the chapter editors and engaged scientists for the book "Destructive Emotions: A Scientific Dialogue with the Dalai Lama", edited by Daniel Goleman. In their meetings, this group of scientists was challenged by the Dalai Lama to use their research to uncover the neuroscience behind destructive emotions so that approaches could be developed to lessen them. Out of this meeting, and the efforts by the scientists involved, and the monks around the Dalai Lama, much of what we know now of cognitive neuroscience, fMRI, PET and EEG studies, etc. as applied to meditation were developed. Richard Davidson's efforts @ the U. of WI @ Madison have been particularly ground-breaking in fMRI.
As one of his many efforts, Mark has developed protocols w/Dr. Richard Brown, @ the Naropa Institute (discussed elsewhere in this blog), for Mindfulness Education under the acronym CARE (Cultivating Awareness and Resilience in Education) in cooperation with the Garrison Institute.
The current project, with Department of Education funding, involves presenting CARE within the context of urban, suburban, and rural districts in central Pennsylvania as part of a two-year study being conducted at the Pennsylvania State University Prevention Research Center to complete the pilot testing and collect preliminary evidence of changes in teacher well-being and classroom outcomes as a result of the CARE program.
Mark is the head of a "leaderless (his description)" meditation group which meets @ various homes of folk mostly from his research group. i was invited to sit with the group a couple of years ago, which i do most weeks, and was invited to guide several sessions recently.
Mark is a truly exceptional guy with much outstanding work in progress at relieving the stresses and turmoil of students through mindfulness meditation routines.
