Our current Homo-sapiens operating system (HS-OS “I”) is
clearly not up to today’s massively-interconnected and highly-complex
institutions, governments, religions, technologies, and resource constraints.
The second section provides a powerful tool for working on this
process, seemingly perfectly tailored to it, the Ribhu Gita, an ancient, little-known nondual text.
“…a revelation for me to learn how much the ''I am this
body" idea is at the root of my self-referential internal narrative
(“blah, blah”)!
“In Evolving Beyond
Thought, Gary Weber makes the case for transcending ordinary consciousness,
with its delusional self-absorption, and explores underappreciated ancient
texts that illuminate the path he has followed to this end.
we are confronted with highly-dysfunctional
societies that have great inequities in distribution of critical resources for
survival, inefficient and corrupt organizations, and unsustainable
population growth that is causing great damage to the environment.
It feels like a "tipping point”. Without fundamental changes in how we interact and function, these issues, largely resulting from our outdated, "I"-based current operating system and supporting software, could well destroy us.
This is not "new", as the Zen master, Alfred Pulyan said in the 1960s, in "The Technique of Awakening":
"...what is called 'normalcy,' the state of the majority of the three billion people on this globe. It has also been described as 'quiet despair' and indeed is a form of paranoia, unsuspected because the constellation of symptoms that characterizes it is common to all of them and so passes unnoticed and undiagnosed.
As we have seen the prognosis for cure is lamentably 'not good' and the evil consequences flowing from it are ultimately the fruitful parents of all sickness of body and mind, and of the rapidly approaching end of life on this planet by one of the two bombs, population or atomic."
In addition to what Pulyan cited, the situation has deteriorated with the looming threat of AI. Dire predictions are coming from folk like Elon Musk and Steven Hawking. Hawking has changed his prognosis on our species' survival down from 1000 years to 100 years.
Changing the belief that the "I" is a
constant, fixed, real, entity to understanding that it is just an "ad
hoc", haphazardly-assembled, mental construct, needs to be as fundamental,
obvious and clear as "the earth is round".
How do we go about updating our brain’s software? Well, a new book manifested from Universal Consciousness/She, "Evolving Beyond Thought: Updating Your Brain's Software", which is now available on Amazon.
The first section of the book focuses on a systematic
approach to working directly on the problems with the current operating system (OS)
and its outdated programs.
The process begins with removing
our current, outdated OS “I” (focused on the “I”) and evaluating the success of
that removal. An updated OS “mini-me”
(less focused on the “I”) is then installed from several trusted and reliable
sources. Next, the most problematic
programs/malware are removed or significantly modified.
Ramana Maharshi |
Thirty-two verses from its 2000 verses were chosen to work on, focused on “Am ‘I’ these thoughts?”,
“What is this mind?”, “Am ‘I’ this body?”, “What problems arise from these beliefs?”, “What am ‘I’?” and then “What are the
benefits of this knowledge?”.
This text was a favorite of my main teacher, Ramana Maharshi, and aligns
perfectly with his “direct path” of self-inquiry for nondual awakening. There is now a video of it being chanted with mudras.
The third section demonstrates that this self-inquiry and
letting-go-of-attachments process works in the “real” world with a “real” job. Through dialogue with Oskar K. Linares, an IT service manager at Catalonia University in Barcelona, we watch as he goes through
the process. Oskar also rock climbs and does sumi-e painting and provided the cover pic and the many pics in the book.
The fourth section focuses on the most problematic, strongly-defended,
and tenacious of the programs in the current OS “I”, the beliefs in “free will” and control. This is at the very core of the egoic/I software.
Selected comments and discussion from blogposts on the issue deal with resistances, objections, and implications.
Reviewer comments on the book's back cover are:
“What a treasure! Imagine browsing a shelf of obscure
and esoteric wisdom books and stumbling upon this potent software manual for
debugging your own mind.

Hi iftah1,
DeleteThere is a European edition on Amazon. That is probably the only way you can get it. The "local bookshops" don't get a special price on it, so they won't make any money on it.

I just ordered a copy to Australia and shipping was only an additional $8 and some change. I imagine it would be similar to other countries.
DeleteIn the meantime, I'm still reaping benefits from Happiness Beyond Thought and your latest Kirtan Kriya video has taken things to an even more pleasing space. Things have shifted to a level of softness I had not expected.
I've been combining Kirtan Kriya with the number skipping exercise you give in Happiness Beyond Thought, as well as some breath withholding to various counts. These work wonders as well for extending concentration and I'm starting to compile the different variations in writing.
There are, of course, an infinity of them, so shall remain grateful to have found your work as a pivotal catalyst along my own journey. Many thanks.
Hi Anthony,
DeleteExcellent information on shipping to Australia. Have been corresponding with someone i've worked with for a while who lives in Tasmania and she was wondering about the delivery time and costs.
you're doing some great work with the Kirtan Kriya process, particularly engaging and working with the breath, skipping numbers, etc. As you say, there are an infinity of variations, which fits with the cognitive neuroscience research on increasing complexity to keep the brain engaged and "learning".
Great that the work is so useful for your journey. These journeys are really individual, different, personal endeavors as they move deeper, for all of us. Exploring your own personal "adaptations", as you are doing, is critical to continued progress.

Gurudev, received the book today. It is a beautiful book to even look and hold. Thanks to Amazon.ca for delivering it in just 5 days and thanks to the Universe for everything!
DeleteHi arun,
DeleteGreat that you got the book so fast. Yes, the book manifested in a way that makes it something that is inviting, welcoming and feels good to hold. It is the type of book that one can open anywhere, and flip back and forth through sections.
The gratitude to the Universe is placing the credit where it belongs.

Hi Gary,
ReplyDeleteIs there a Kindle version of the book coming?
I was wondering why the blog posts were so infrequent over the past year - now I know.
I've enjoyed all of your other books.
Thanks
Hi Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteNo, it was not possible to create a Kindle version, despite my expectation of getting it done easily. The book was self-published through CreateSpace (CS) an Amazon subsidiary, which had been directly linked to the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) subsidiary.
However, midway through this process of several months, CS announced that their "interior services" group which was working on EBT would be shut down with some steps, like creating a Kindle version, having already passed.
The "cover services" CS group had already finished the EBT cover, and a Kindle cover, which was great, IMHO. However, once it was announced that the "interior services" CS group would be shut down, not surprisingly, there was decreased interest in finishing books.
There were serious “conversations” with CS and they finally did produce an excellent book.
The CS folk were separated from KDP, which for several reasons made it impossible to generate a Kindle version, including that KDP had no “interior services” folk to “Kindlize” it, as CS had done it before, and the existence of EBT with its own ISBN, etc. required coordination between CS and KDP in “harmonizing” the versions which didn’t exist.
Bottom line, no Kindle version, but not for lack of trying.
Something may change in the future which would make a Kindle version possible, but as Amazon apparently has decided that book publishing isn't a good business it isn't likely. Book publishing in general, is a terrible business now, so that isn't a big surprise.

Couldn't buy it as I'm from Brazil. Immensely grateful for the free link and all the rich videos on your youtube channel. Thank you!
DeleteHello Gary,
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the new book release. I've discovered your blog recently and it's been a mixed bag of reactions.
As a person who suffers enormously from guilt, your blogs on free will were like unchaining my mental shackles. A sense of peace set in. But only to vanish soon enough because my mind came up with so many questions. Can you please help me clear these doubts-
1. The more I try to incorporate the "We lack free will" truth into my thought process, the more my mind says that I am trying to run away from my responsibilities. Logically it makes sense that if I give up a sense of ownership, I do give up responsibilities, because well, what has to happen will happen.
2. It seems like the stronger I assimilate the truth of lacking free will, the less motivated I am to do things that I am supposed to do. I've job interviews coming up but here I am desperately searching your blog to reconcile the idea of illusory free will AND personal responsibility.
3. Regarding the self-inquiry "Who am I?" that you suggest, my mind is like -" Yea, I understand there is no single "I" inside my brain. But where is the peace that you were promised?" The self referential thoughts are still there even though I know there is no "I". And the thoughts aren't peaceful. They are constantly questioning my quest to be free from suffering - "You are on the wrong path. Even though there is no "I" inside you, you still need to deal with all the thoughts ( incl nasty ones ) that occur in your brain". It's like my mind has found a round around way of tackling my new found understanding of free will. When will self inquiry stop? How can I make sure I am on the right path? How can I answer my mind of why I should stick with self-inquiry?
4. You say that universe is evolving through us. And I see you see 'Her' as a divine entity. How do you explain cruelty and evil in the world? Why did She choose some people to suffer immensely( Rape, murder, war, child abuse etc ) and some to be blissfully unaware. I somehow am unable to see nature as divine and purposeful. I see randomness and cruelty that can't be explained by an entity that's merciful or evolving through learning. It seems like She is a class teacher who's partial to some students and mean to some others. How should I tackle this doubt?
Sorry for gatecrashing into the book release discussion but the questions inside me are really begging for answers.
Thanks
Pavan
Hi Pavan,
DeleteGreat that realizing that you don't have "control" or "free will" is so liberating...it was for "me" as well. A big surprise at how much "stuff" was being hauled around that was just meaningless.
your questions 1, 2 and 3 all have the same answer...as you suspect "my mind has found a round around way of tackling my new found understanding of free will". This is what happens for everyone...the mind sees the danger (to itself) of this new perspective and these really problematic "self-inquiry" and "letting go" practices.
As you will find in EBT, the mind is only a bunch of thoughts with all sorts of distortions and imaginary problems. If you watch yourself as you have interactions with others, you'll see that there are many Is/egos/Pavans...hundreds of them.
A bunch of them, concerned about their job security and very existence, have ganged up now and are trying to preserve their great offices and benefits with every story they can imagine. Just persevere with this "dangerous" self-inquiry and "letting go" with all of their stories and the number and strength of Is/egos/Pavans will diminish dramatically.
On 4. evolution, in nature, is relentless about ensuring that only the most successful "programs" are passed on to the next generation. As everything in this universe that we can observe is evolving, it is obvious that the Field must also be evolving and must have at least all of the properties that our species has re intellect, self-awareness, intelligence, etc. but, IME, at a far higher and broader level and with "connections" and powers we don't have.
we are the evolutionary-sensing pods through which the Field evolves. She is exploring every possibility for increasing the aggregate "information" contained within Her/the Field, including what you regard as "cruel", "evil" and "random" in this exploration.
Personally, almost nothing happened in "this life" that i wanted...i suffered much trauma as a kid and didn't choose a mangled hand, some genetically-deformed extremities, one short leg, or many other really hard experiences.
There was learning in those situations that i wasn't this body, this mind, these thoughts, etc. and all of the suffering drove me to find a way to be free of it. Perhaps that was so this discussion could manifest and there could be a movement to "evolve beyond thought" and fix our "brain's outdated software" that we evolved with.
Trust this is useful.

ReplyDeleteHi Unknown,
DeleteGreat that Amazon in Canada is so responsive.
Yes, the cover did come out really well. Oskar Linares, as pointed out in the post, made the sumi-e pic for the cover and for all of the internal pics as well and was the one who was in the dialogue for "what it's like to do this process with a "real job" in a "real world".
Great that you are finding it to be a wonderful resource. stillness

ReplyDeleteHi Jake,
DeleteGreat that you enjoyed it.
your and Dominic's book was a key factor, as described in EBT, to this book manifesting (although of course, She does it all).
Oskar wasn't interested in putting out a similar book but was very supportive of what manifested with our dialogue and provided all of the sumi-e pics, including the beautiful one for the cover.
She did a nice job on the book, but She didn't make it easy when CS shut down.

Hi Glenn,
DeleteFolk have been finding it useful. It's not a "beginner's book", so it should work for you.
Universal Consciousness/She shut down the "author support" services at CreateSpace, the Amazon self-publishing service in the middle of the process, and severed it from Kindle as described above, but, IMHO, an excellent vehicle emerged.

gary
Gary, I'm not sure if or how I can help. But I've released over 20 Kindle books with CreateSpace and ACX audiobook components.
DeleteThe first thing that comes to mind is to:
1. Simply create the Kindle version. My assistant can probably get it done in a week or less.
There are a few Table of Content considerations that KDP needs to see, and there may be more depending on the configuration of the book. My copy hasn't arrived yet, so I don't know what it looks like.
2. Upload a beta Kindle version (hint: all Kindle version are perpetually beta). You may need to create a KDP account if you don't already have one. Happy to hop on a Skype call and walk you or someone through it if needed.
3. Add all the product description elements.
4. Send it to Amazon to approve.
5. Email Amazon after approval with the link to the Kindle version of the book and the print version. Ask them to "fuse" the two.
Generally, the algorithm will find the two on its own, but sending an email speeds up the process. I have found that epistolary niceties like, "Dear Amazon" and "Sincerely" at the end also help in such correspondences.
After that, there are bells and whistles I can advise on with your Amazon Author page if you like, not to mention getting the audibook done without spending a dime.
ACX has a very cool royalty structure for people who just wants to get things into the world that automatically rewards the author and the narrator without any of the fuss. I have found many excellent narrators there and they generally seem happy with how ACX gets them gigs.
Several narrators have cheerfully done more than one of my books without any upfront fees. I expect you would have a similar experience.
Again, if I can be of service, just let me know. I realize that there are challenges with the tech and the platforms, but I've been blessed with the energy and wherewithal to push through for some reason.
Great things can happen for many people as a result when we do, and I'm especially sensitive to the potential for impact if we can get audio versions of your books. This consumption preference is growing and shows no signs of slowing.
We can also think about how to build in some audio-friendly and Kindle-friendly mechanisms that will grow your YouTube subscriber following and help more people find this blog.
Finally, I know that these suggestions come with the burden of time, energy and experimenting on a few levels. I never forget that our word "gift" is the German word for "poison."
But if the gift of my help is not a burden, it is here and wrapped with no particular concern for the outcome, only a sparkling feeling that it cannot help but be good to get your works available to people in the media they prefer despite, but not in spite of, the dangers of "digital amnesia." :)
Hi Anthony,
DeleteMuch gratitude for such a detailed and comprehensive approach to expanding the "digital" footprint of EBT...incredibly impressive. Brilliant ways to "work in/with" the Amazon world in a rapidly changing scene as they move away from publishing.
The EBT/CS/Kindle situation precipitated a reflection on just why "the Universe" had danced it that way...what was Her "message"?
Just a few days ago got another "message" from of all places, the WSJ, with an article "I'd Be an "A" Student If I Could Just Read My Notes" which describes how many of the top US universities are banning laptops in class, including Cornell, Georgetown, UC Berkeley, and many others.
This forces the students to actively "engage" with the material by writing it down and "encoding" it, something that many studies have shown is superior to "laptopping" it.
It is the same reason that i have moved almost totally away from talks, workshops, and videos, as the active "engagement" is so low and so little progress manifests.
i have shifted to working 1/1 with folk by email w/occasional skypes/zooms/hangouts as it forces them to actively encode, wait and ponder, decode, consider, etc. There is much more meaningful progress.
Additionally, as there are already over 110 videos, 289 key-word searchable blogposts, four books, many podcasts and interviews, covering every topic so that DIY is possible, particularly with the 1/1 emails.
So, reflecting this "digital amnesia", and the need for deeper, active engagement, EBT will only be available hardcopy.
As with my other books, if there are any "profits", they will go to children's charities in south India.
Gratitude for your comments, interest and support.

gary, have Dominic, Oskar and others reached "nondual awakening" through your method?
ReplyDeleteIf so,that would be very inspiring.
Hi anonymous,
DeleteThis is an unending process of discovery...that is why it is called "awakening", not "awakened".
As one of the famous Zen masters said, in Philip Kapleau's wonderful book,"The Three Pillars of Zen", is "what these people fail to realize is that their enlightenment is capable of endless enlargement".
What you see for Dominic and Oskar in the dialogues is where they were when we were having those discussions...they are someplace further along now.
It's a journey not a destination...

Hi Gary,
DeleteYes, but it does seem like 'you' have gone past some finishing line which many of your students have not. Could you please comment?
J. Ru
Hi JenRu,
DeleteIt is important to recognize that i have no "students", nor am i a "teacher", and don't recall ever using those terms. This work is about sharing whatever has been learned in nondual awakening. As acknowledged in Evolving Beyond Thought, i learn so much from the folk that i work with.
On a "finishing line", as explained above, this work really does go on and on and on and expands and deepens as long as one continues to do it.
There are trillions of synaptic connections that relate in some way to our attachments, stories, fears, traumas, etc. and our outdated OS and its programs. Updating and reconfiguring all of that neural architecture is a never-ending process.
stillness
Hi,Gary.
DeleteThere is a word "Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi"(阿耨多罗三藐三菩提,无上正等正觉)in Buddhism which means buddha has reached the highest nondual enlightenment,is there a enlightenment state where there is no more to enlarge.
Apologize for my poor English.
Hi dabin,
DeleteAs Robert Wright described in his recent book "Why Buddhism Is True: The Science and Technology of Meditation and Enlightenment", i which i manifest, we have no idea what the Buddha said.
Buddha wasn't alive when a group of his followers got together and decided what they thought he said and then put it into Pali. Buddha taught in regional dialects that don't translate directly into Pali. This consensus version in Pali was passed down orally for 300 years, until they were written down. After that they were passed through many sects with various interpretations.
As the neuroscience cited above demonstrates, it is virtually inconceivable that he reached a state "where there is no more to enlarge". Even if he did reach it, as the surrounding environment has changed dramatically since then, it is unlikely that whatever it was, it would be regarded as such today.
With all due respect, this is a "religious" statement. For belief, we have religion, for facts, we have science. The science doesn't support the statement.
stillness
The title of Wright's book is incorrect. It is "The Science and Philosophy of Meditation and Enlightenment"
Deletestillness
Gary, I am really confused about the free will. You are saying "It feels like a "tipping point”. Without fundamental changes etc etc." Yet at the same time you've been saying that everything is predetermined, all is well and "she" is orchestrating everything better than any human. So what is causing all the distractions then? Aren't we all guided by the consciousness one way or another, awaken or asleep?
ReplyDeleteYes, you are correct, everything is predetermined. There are two quotes that are very helpful as to what "everything" means. The first is from Albert Einstein:
Delete"Everything is determined, the beginning as well as the end, by forces over which we have no control. It is determined for the insect, as well as for the star. Human beings, vegetables, or cosmic dust, we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible piper."
The second is from Ramana Maharshi:
Questioner: "Are only the important things in a man's life, such as his main occupation or profession, predetermined, or are trifling acts also, such as taking a cup of water, or moving from one part of the room to another?
To which Ramana replied:
"Everything is predetermined".
Even your "confusion" is predetermined. Whether or not you will let go into the reality that everything is predetermined, and have that load of personal blame and responsibility lifted from your shoulders, or you won't, is also predetermined.
It is also helpful to remember that She is everything and everyone, and the trees, the birds and the bees.

DeleteI feel that these books work very well in conjunction and as a circle.
I've been recently re-reading them both simultaneously as I memorized the selections from the Ribhu Gita in "Evolving Beyond Thought. "
My own path with them started with Happiness and so it's hard for me to imagine it any other way, though it certainly could work.
In all cases, the value has been compounding for me and I remain grateful that these materials exist, especially in print.
Hi Anthony,
DeleteThanks for the informed and experienced input, and for the confirmation that "especially in print" they have great value.
That is the consistent result in studies on retention and comprehension..."in print" is significantly better. The best students here at the university may scan them "downloaded", but if they're serious about the material, they get it in print.
Very useful input as always.

Thanks Anthony and Gary. I ended up buying all 3 beyond thought books and found them very helpful and entertaining to read. I seem to find something new in them when I reread parts of the books.
DeleteCurious Gary, I have heard people experience no-self first and some months/years later experience unity/oneness and others will have the exact opposite experience. At which point does the steady stream of dopamine kick in?
Hi dwillis,
DeleteGreat that you found all of the "beyond thought" books to be so helpful and entertaining. Like many such books, every time you go back to them, you find something new.
As they emerged out of "nowhere", i also find them very useful to revisit time and again and am amazed by all of them.
Many folk have "experiences" of no-self, and unity/Oneness, manifesting over and over again, as the self-inquiry and "letting go" practices continue, often with dopamine-induced "reinforcement".
The goal is to not have "experiences" but a persistent "state". When the egos/Is have been significantly deconstructed, and a "state" reached, there be steady dopamine with opioid reinforcement.
Trust this is useful.
